Local and international cyclists will taste tough life on the saddle from Songwe in Karonga to Cape Maclear in Mangochi this October when they will battle for prizes in the inaugural 800 kilometre Tour de Lake Malawi Race.

Primic Promotions in conjunction with Cycling Federation of Malawi (CFM) have organised the 10-day event that will be categorised into Kabaza (Bicycle taxis), Mountain Bikes and Elite Cycling races.

According to Primic Promotions’ creative and promotions director Prince Chokhotho Mboma, the race will have nine stoppages in the lakeshore districts of Karonga, Rumphi, Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota, Salima and Mangochi.

“Winners on each stoppage will be given prizes such as cash and bikes. But at the last point of the race, cyclists with better accumulative time throughout the event, will become overall winners and get their prizes. We are currently finalising discussions with our sponsors on how the winners will be awarded,” he said.

CFM general secretary Jimmy Kadewere said the competition will involve more than 50 cyclists and he said it will be a motivation for the cyclists as it will be the most lucrative contest for them.

However, Chokhotho said the cycling race, is one of the eight activities that will be conducted to promote tourism along the lakeshore areas from October 24 to November 3.

Other products of the festival will be mobile clinics, agriculture and commercial shows, visits to national heritage sites, lunch and dinner dances with living legends, music shows and fashion shows.

“On each stoppage, people will be receiving free medical services from the mobile clinics that will be set up and there will be some cultural dances and agriculture shows on the way,” Chokhotho said.
