DCs oriented on Comsip project
Comsip Cooperative Union Limited has oriented 13 district commissioners from the Southern Region on its Livelihood Support Project, a sub-component of the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project.
Through the project, the union trains Social Cash Transfer and Public Works Programmes beneficiaries to save and invest in profitable businesses for sustainable livelihoods.
Speaking on the sidelines of the workshop on Friday in Blantyre, Comsip chief executive officer Tenneson Gondwe said the project will disburse K300 000 to each household.
“We will train beneficiaries in business management and how to use resources efficiently,” he said.
Gondwe said they are targeting 10 000 households in the country’s 28 districts working under Climate Smart Public Works Programme and Livelihood activities to increase their resilience to various climatic shocks.
“Comsip has decentralised the project and it will be implemented through local government in the districts,” he said.
Machinga district commissioner Rosemary Nawasha said the social protection initiatives will scale up economic empowerment among rural women in her district.
The five-year project, which rolled out in 2021, is supported by the World Bank and initially targeted 70 000 households before the number was increased up to 470 000.
