Eagles revive slim title hopes

Blue Eagles yesterday revived their slim hopes of winning the TNM Super League when they thumped Salima Sugar Dedza Dynamos 4-0 at Nankhaka  Stadium in Lilongwe.

The victory saw the Malawi Police Service side climbing two places up to second position with 53 points from 26 matches.

They trail leaders Nyasa Big Bullets by eight points, but the People’s Team have a game in hand.

Chirwa claimed a brace for Eagles

The win provided the cops some solace after their title hopes were dealt a blow the previous weekend following their 1-0 loss to  Kamuzu Barracks.

According to updates on Super League media forum, Blossoming winger Gaddie Chirwa was the toast of the afternoon for Eagles after claiming a brace.

Ian Chinyama put Eagles in front in the 15th minute with a spectacular drive from the left flank before Chirwa doubled the lead in the 33rd minute after being put through by Trouble Banda.

The Area 30-based side led 2-0 at the interval.

In the second half, Dedza coach Daniel Dzinkambani made a double substitution, taking off Lameck Gamphani and Henry Sanudi for Chimwemwe Royal and Henry Misanjo, respectively.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Limbani Suwedi was shown the red card for a deliberate foul on Chirwa.

Eagles made good use of their numerical advantage and added the third when Richard Rapson dribbled past a bemused Dedza defence before his shot was deflacted into the net by Kondwani Kathumba.

Chirwa struck the fourth late into the match.

Eagles coach Eliah Kananji said the win gives them hope of a top two finish.

He said: “We haven’t yet given up hope on the title although it’s no longer in our hands.

“We’ll keep on fighting to the very end.”

On his part, Dzankambani said his charges were out of sorts.

“We just didn’t play our usual game,” he said.

At Mzuzu Stadium, Silver Strikers edged Moyale Barracks 1-0 via substitute Rodwell Robert’s 72nd minute strike.

Silver have moved a step up to fifth with 45 points from 28 matches

In the battle against relegation, Sable Farming beat TN Stars 2-1 at Kasungu Stadium.
