Lilongwe chief education officer Jennifer Chilunga has commended World Vision Malawi for promoting education in Nkhoma and Chilenje area programmes in the district.

She said this on Friday at Nkhoma Primary School in the district where World Vision Malawi in collaboration with Healthwize Malawi conducted an inter-school quiz finals.

“The initiative is good. It is even encouraging to see different players in the education sector noting the gaps that exist and coming up with solutions,” said Chilunga.

World Vision Malawi district programme manager Harold Munthali said quiz competitions are important as they help learners in their studies

“Through such initiatives, we want to ensure that children are able to read and write at an early age,” he said.

Munthali said the initiative will also address school dropout rate as it will improve performance.

“There are children who do not go to school, but we are working with school committees to ensure that every child goes to school,” he said.

Healthwize Malawi executive director Tendai Chidzele said apart from empowering learners, the initiative seeks to encourage parents to be part of their children’s literacy development.

“We work with community leaders and parents to participate in their children’s learning development because they lack such support in their learning journey,” she said.

The K12.5 million Maphunziro Mbambande Project targeted 16 schools in Chowo and Nkhoma education zones in the district.

Chowo Primary School emerged champions with 93 points against Nkhoma’s 87
