Egenco says short-term energy solutions on course
Electricity Generation Company of Malawi (Egenco) has assured the country of improved electricity supply following near completion of its short-term energy solutions.
Presently, the country is facing acute power supply challenges with hydro-electric generation capacity reduced to around 200 megawatts (MW) which is anchored by diesel-powered generators installed in the country’s three cities.
But Egenco chief executive officer William Liabunya said in an interview on Wednesday that 20MW will be added to the national grid by the end of this month (July) which will be followed by another addition of 12MW and 10MW in September.
He said the company is also pursuing several other projects to improve power generation capacity in the country such as rehabilitation of Tedzani III Power Station which completes 2020 and several others which complete in 2019.
“At the present time, our focus is on improving our generation capacity and the efficiency of the machines. This August we are starting the rehabilitation and updating of Tedzani III power station which upon completion will add 81.5 megawatts to the grid,” he said.
Minister of Natural Resources Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Aggrey Masi in a separate interview Wednesday said government is banking on various initiatives undertaken by government through Egenco as well as development partners to ease the energy problems facing the country.
