EU affirms energy sector support
The European Union (EU) has affirmed its commitment to supporting Malawi’s energy sector in its quest to boost electricity access while promoting clean energy.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said this in an interview made available to The Nation on the sidelines of the Seventh EU, African Union (AU) Summit held in Luanda, Angola from November 24 to 25.

Among others, she cited a 500-million-euro energy package, stressing it shows commitment to the efforts that the EU makes towards supporting the energy sector.
The energy initiative package will involve the European Investment Bank, national development finance institutions and the private sector.
“The EU is supporting the development, rehabilitation and climate resilience of key regional and national energy infrastructure in Malawi,” said Von der Leyen.
She further said the EU plans to support rehabilitation of the Eastern Backbone Transmission line to increase electricity reliability and stability, especially in the Central and Northern regions.
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the partnership between the EU and AU is well-placed to be a central axis of a new multipolar world.
The summit, held under the theme ‘Promoting peace and prosperity through effective multilateralism’, also marked 25 years of the partnership between the EU and AU.
