Ex-Escom coaches engage debt collectors

Former Escom United coaches Charles Manda, Aubrey Nankhuni and McDonald Mtetemera have engaged debt collectors, Business Management Bureau, in a last-gasp attempt to recover unpaid dues.

The bureau’s director Madalitso Christopher Nyirenda confirmed that the matter has not been taken to court yet as they are trying to reach a payment agreement with Fanuel Nkhono, chairperson for the club that is now called Kabula United.

“We have presented their claim and we are waiting for feedback,” Nyirenda said yesterday.

Previously, Manda had, through a lawyer, negotiated for an out-of-court settlement with little success, hence the involvement of the debt collectors.

“They earlier only paid me K300 000 (about $750) after agreeing an out-of-court settlement. It is now two years and the club [Kabula] is still operating which means they have money. Why can’t they meet our contractual obligations? We have letters proving we were Escom employees working under Escom United. My contract was running up to 2014,” said Manda.

In an e-mailed response on Wednesday, Nkhono confirmed that there were ongoing legal proceedings.

“They did that last month. I guess the matter is being dealt with by our learned lawyers. We have been in touch with their lawyer. That is part of life and, hopefully, the matter will be resolved soon,” said Nkhono.
