The government of Zambia, through its Public Sector Pension Fund (PSPF) has announced that it will be paying monthly pension to Malawians who once worked for the country’s public sector but returned home following retirement.
The announcement follows a Zambia delegation led by PSPF assistant operation manager Patrick Bobo which was in the country for the past weeks to map out modalities aimed at identifying the beneficiary pensioners.
Speaking when he held a meeting with Ministry of Labour official on Monday in Lilongwe, Bobo said it is the wish of Zambia government to make sure that all Malawians who rendered their services in the Zambia public sector since 1960s get their dues in form of pension.
“We noticed that the number of pensioners on our payroll was reducing. Initially, we were paying about 300 people but we realised that the number reduced to 99 and we are aware that most Malawians had rendered their services in Zambia and that is why we called ministry of labour for us to carry out this exercise,” said Bobo.
He also informed Ministry of Labour Officials and journalists that they have engaged Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) as the official bank to facilitate the payment to the pensioners adding that so far they have already deposited $10 000 (K4.4 million).
