Five juveniles escape custody

Five juveniles held at Dedza Police Station over housebreaking offences have escaped after drilling a hole of the wall in the cell they were locked in, police have confirmed.

One of the escapees has since been re-arrested.

The juveniles, aged between 11 and 13, staged the daring escape from custody while they were held awaiting transport to Chilwa Reformatory Centre in Zomba.

“They had a metal object which they used to drill a hole. We are currently investigating the matter,” said Dedza Police spokesperson Edward Kabango.

Police, he said, have since launched a manhunt for the four suspects still at large.

A source said a guardian of one of the re-arrested juveniles informed police about the presence of the boy who had recently been found guilty of housebreaking.
