Renowned female musician Temwah has launched the Empower Her Music Series, which aims to address gender disparities in the music industry and empower aspiring female artists across the country.

Inspired by her struggles and the lack of support she encountered during the early years of her music journey, as a female musician, the artist wants to use her experience as a tool to make a difference.

Temwah: We aim to address the gender disparity in music business

Speaking in an interview, the Ndili Kuti hit-maker said she wants to address the gender gap existing in the music industry and make a difference for female artists.

“The initiative aims to address the gender disparity in music business, but also change the narrative of women and girls pursuing music as a career not a hobby,” she said.

Temwah said despite being exposed and having a supportive community, there are other challenges female artists face that she hopes to challenge through the initiative.

“Most female artists lack planning and execution knowledge, financial literacy and muscle to help them promote themselves. So, I plan on sharing with them what works for me through experience and explore with them other different ways,” she said.

The initiative, which kicked off with an open call for applications, has already attracted aspiring female artists from various regions of Malawi aiming to provide opportunities to those with potential regardless of background or location.

Up-and-coming artist Faith Music, who is based in Mzuzu, says she is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to participate in the initiative.

She highlighted that the music industry does not make it easy for one to penetrate, especially for female artists and added that such initiatives can help make it easier for them as they go about exploring their talents.

“I have had challenges promoting my music or plan for a project because it is hard to get a promo from a platform that is very influential, and I am sure that this initiative will help me and others overcome these challenges,” said Faith Music, who is among those to participate in the initiative.

Through Empower Her Music Series, Temwah plans to reach 30 up-and-coming artists this year conducting music workshops and exploring topics that can help enhance talent while breaking stereotypes in the industry.

The star, known for her afro jazz songs, is a multi-award winning artist. In 2023, she won the Maso Awards Best Female Artist of the Year and MBC Entertainers award of Best Secular Female Artist of the Year.

She has graced national media leaving a mark on stages such as the Lake of Stars in 2019.
