Foundation gives Salima community relief food

Yao Development Foundation has distributed relief maize to over 200 households in Mndala Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Ndindi in Salima to cushion them from looming hunger caused by dry spells.

Speaking on Sunday during the distribution, the foundation’s publicity secretary Mufti Shamuna Sosola said they rolled out the initiative following dry spells that destroyed maize in the area this year.

He said: “The maize crop has failed completely and there is no hope these people will yield anything. At a time some people have started eating maize from their gardens, these people have nothing to eat.

“As a result, we sourced the food to share with them.”

Group village head  Mndala said people the dry spells exacerbated people’s situation as they were coming from the background of food insecurity.

“People did not harvest enough the previous season due to dry spells. When they planted their crops in December last year, they were hopeful that they would get something. Unfortunately, prolonged dry spells in January did the damage, and here they are again, stranded,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Brenda Yusufu from Mndala Village, T/A Ndindi said the maize will go a long way to sustain their lives.

“I have been going to bed on empty tummy. My family now has food for the next days or so,” she said.

Yusufu appealed to other organisations to support them with modern farming technologies to ensure they produce their own food
