Funding delays Luanar projects

Construction of new teaching complex and administration blocks at the Bunda Campus for Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) have stalled due to reduced funding from government.

According to Luanar vice-chancellor Kanyama Phiri, the college normally gets about K2 billion per year, but this financial year the institution only got K 700 million.

Said Phiri: “The projects currently underway were supposed to be completed by now, but that has not been the case. The main problem has been reduced funding due to poor government cash flow. We will need about K7 billion to complete the project.”

He expressed worry over the delay, saying the longer it takes to complete the project, the more money will be needed because prices of commodities keep on rising.

“This project is very important because currently some students are learning in tents where ventilation is poor,” said Kanyama.

Apart from constructing the teaching complex and the administration blocks, there are also plans to build one theatre to accommodate about 400 students.

According to the Bunda Campus master plan, the college is expected to have banks, a sports complex, shopping mall and an entertainment centre.
