South Africa-based Malawian forward Frank Gabadinho Mhango was the architect of his club AmaZulu’s two goals when they beat Cape Town City 2-1 to qualify for the semi-finals of the MTN8 in Cape Town on Saturday.

In a match monitored on SuperSport television channel, the Flames hitman set up the first goal for Usuthu in the ninth minute when he displayed sheer class to win back possession in the opponents’ half before setting up Nigerian Chid Kwem for the opener.

City levelled the scores moments before half time through Khanyisa Mayo’s volley.

Mhango: I was excited

The two teams started the second half at full throttle and AmaZulu nearly regained the lead when Mhango, who turned on a vintage display, set up Bonginkosi Ntuli who failed to keep his header on target.

But just when it looked like the match would be decided through penalty shootout, Mhango also had a hand in AmaZulu’s winning goal scored by former Kaizer Chiefs marksman Lehlohonolo Majoro in the 113th minute.

In an interview yesterday, Mhango said although he did not get on the score-sheet, he was happy with his contribution.

He said: “I think it was an exciting game and I am delighted to have set up the two goals. Apart from that, I felt my performance was quite good though it could have been better.”

The Flames striker left Orlando Pirates to join AmaZulu and he has started a new lease of life at his new club with a bang, having scored three league goals.

Mhango has also inspired AmaZulu to unbeaten run with 10 points from four games, winning three and drawing one.

Usuthu became the first team to reach this season’s MTN8 semis and the Durban-based side is next scheduled to take on Kaizer Chiefs in the DStv Premiership on September 3.
