Malawi cricket national team will on Friday leave for the Triangular Tournament in Mozambique with peace of mind after General Alliance Insurance Company offered them travel insurance cover for free.

The cover, which is worth K25 million, comprises medical expenses, loss of baggage, loss of documents, dental care and repatriation fee for each of the players in the 17-member squad.

“Each player is covered if he loses anything and requires medical attention during the trip. We want them to have peace of mind as they represent the country on the international stage,” said the company’s corporate development manager Hastings Kapesa.

The team, which is expected to battle it out against Zambia and Mozambique at Manica Province in Maputo on Sunday, has been training for two months preparing for the competition.

This will be Malawi cricket team’s first international appearance in five years and the first match since the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) lifted the country’s ban last year.

Malawi last played a match in 2009 when they hosted and won the World Cricket League (WCL) Africa Division Three Tournament to earn promotion into Division Two. However, inactivity led to the team’s recent relegation to Division Three.

The current national team is being mentored by former Irish international South Africa-born Andre Botha, who represented Ireland at the Cricket World Cup in 2007 and 2011.

The squad comprises Sailesh Jeena, Alick Kamsonkho, Arjun Kalaria, Gift Kamsonkho, Gershom Mtambalika, Robert Kanyandula, Trevor Kuluwani, Donnex Kamsonkho, Marvellous Friday, Dickson Matiya, Osman Mhango, Tyler Howse, Michael Nyson and Robert Mpinda.
