Gesd project builds K115m teacher development centre
Likoma district director of education, youth and sports Zimulange Mhango has commended the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) project for constructing a K115 million teacher development centre at Chizumulu Island.
He thanked government for the provision of infrastructure such as classroom blocks, libraries and the teacher development centre.
“Government has provided the infrastructure. We also have a good number of qualified teachers,” said Mhango.

However, he noted some challenges in the education sector which need to be addressed such as lack of district education office, school toilets and vehicles.
Speaking when she handed over the facility last week, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima said teachers will no longer use a classroom to conduct their business.
“Now there is space, a good environment they call a teacher development centre where teachers can use for their development activities,” she said.
Wirima noted that teachers from the island encounter some challenges that should be looked into such as huge transport costs when they need services from the mainland.
Likoma legislator Ashems Songwe (Malawi Congress Party) commended the minister for the visit.
He said this was the second time a minister of Education has visited Chizumulu since 1966.
“The minister’s visit is historic as it has happened after 59 years. We are pleased that she has conducted a tour to appreciate the projects that have been taking place for the past five years,” he said.
