Globe Metals calls for proper settlement plan

Globe Metals and Mining has urged authorities to develop proper settlement and investment plans to restrict development of squatters on mines that are being explored and developed in the country.

The firm, which is exploring niobium at Kanyika Niobium Mine in Mzimba, fears that if the mine is not well planned, it could attract quatters around the mine site.

In an interview on Tuesday, Globe Metals and Mining chairperson Neville Huxham said the development of big mines should follow urban planning or industrial parks by government near the mines.

He said this does not only prevent the squatters, but also generates urban development, provide more economic opportunities to job seekers, reduce levels of desperation in the mining areas.

The Kanyika Niobium Mine has a lifespan of between 23 and 38 years and could generate revenue amounting to $5 billion (K8.7 billion) per annum, produce 3 250 tonnes of niobium and 140 tonnes of tantalum per year.

The mining venture has potential to attract more people close to the mining area, thereby boosting population growth.

Minister of Mining Monica Chang’anamuno could not immediately respond to our questionnaire.

However, economist Bond Mtembezeka observed that while there is need to build the capacity of district councils to optimise opportunities that come with mining, it becomes tricky to put up long-term investment in the supporting industries due to the short lifespan and abrupt closures.

He said: “The idea is a good one, but the challenge is that most mining projects we have seen have always either had a limited lifespan or abandoned abruptly so that creates a challenge to create sustainable and progressive settlements and industries around these mining areas.”

Globe Metals and Mining signed a Mining Development Agreement to develop the Kanyika Niobium Mine, but it is in discussion with governmentfor to  also develop Kasiya Rutile and Graphite Mine.
