lantyre music lovers were on Saturday treated to a unique performance by Goma Nyondo where he brought local sounds from Karonga, Chitipa and surrounding areas.

During the show at Kwa Haraba Arts Cafe, the artist performed some hymns popular in the Northern Region.

Speaking before the start of the show, Nyondo said though he is a versatile musician, he expresses himself in his mother tongue.

“I express myself better in my mother tongue. Everyone who loves music can still feel the vibe and have a good time while appreciating and learning other cultures,” he said.

Nyondo opened his set with a Tumbuka hymn before performing other songs in KyaNgonde such as Ngowanile, Ambolera, Ngulunguluka and many others.

But it was the song Denya Denya that forced to abandon their seats and dance, with others rolling on the ground apparently just like they do in the village when dancing to the song.

Mesmirised patrons with his performance: Nyondo

When Nyondo announced the end of his performance patrons protested, forcing him to perform two more songs, including the popular folk song titled Sewera Sewera.

His band comprised Peter Likhomo on the bass guitar, Daniel Khoviwa on the keyboard, Kennedy Phiri on the lead guitar and Miracle Njoloma on the drums.

In an interview after the performance, a patron who only identified himself as Alick said such performances celebrating cultural and local music should be supported and promoted.

“I feel like I am home in Chitipa. This is unique and beautifully presented,” he said.

Though the event had low patronage, Nyondo and his band gave out a seamless performance. Apart from Tumbuka and KyaNgonde, he also did some songs in Lambya.

Nyondo is also a renowned cover artist who regularly performs with Mibawa Band.
