Former Malawi finance minister Dr Goodal Gondwe has bounced back into active politics and has since been endorsed as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for Mzimba North Constituency for the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

Gondwe, who was DPP vice-president, quit active politics soon after the death of former president Dr Bingu wa Mutharika last year.

He also declared that he would not contest in the elections as a member of Parliament (MP), but was seen at DPP functions.

But on Monday Gondwe declared his comeback at a rally at Madise Primary School ground in Mzimba.

Gondwe said his comeback has been influenced by a number of factors, including the looting at Capital Hill.

“I said I was quitting politics after the death of Dr Bingu wa Mutharika. You know he is the one who brought me into politics, so the time he died I felt I should also leave politics.

“However, a lot of things have happened after his death. We have witnessed arrests, the hunger which has affected many Malawians, the rise in cost of living and this cashgate. Things were in shape when DPP took over government, we managed to fix the economy and it is only DPP that can fix the economy again,” he said.

Gondwe, who was endorsed candidate without going through primaries, claimed chiefs and people of the constituency also influenced his comeback as they kept asking him to stand as an MP.

  1. I suppose it’s difficult for some folks to get a life beyond politics.
Gondwe could be valuable in areas outside the world of politics….
he needs to find out what that is. Why not consider identifying, mentoring,
and developing individuals for the future. Mr Gondwe: Thank you for your
past service and contribution to Malawi. However, it’s time to move on and
allow people to develop into new leaders. Go in peace and may God be with you!

  2. Mr. Gondwe we have respect for you however we may lose it with your comeback. There are alot of ways in which you could contribute to the development of this country while at home and outside the world of politics, for example, what you are saying that has influenced you to get back into politics, you could find aspiring youths and mentor them into the right direction, teach them what they can do to get the country back on the right track….If you cling to doing things by yourself, what will happen when you die? poti simunaphunzitse anthu palibe succession plan iliyonse what so ever….Mukulakwira ana amutsogolo….

  3. NO TO CURRENT(JB,MK20 BILLION) AND PAST(MUTHALIKA’S,MK61 BILLIO),MULUZI (MK1.7 BILLION) LOOTERS IN 2014 WHEN THOSE WITH CLEAN HANDS (THE DR CHAKWERA’S) ARE AVAILABLE.

DPP CANNOT BE TRUSTED ANYMORE,MALAWIANS MEMORIES ARE STILL FRESH ABOUT THE LACK OF FUEL AND FOREX. VOTTING FOR DPP WOULD MEAN BRINGING BACK THE LOMWELISATION OF KEY GOVT POSITIONS AND BUSINESSES, INTOLERNCE, ARROGANCE AND BAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH KEY DONORS SUCH AS UK.

  4. politics at play…peter would like to have a northerner as a running mate…..lets wait and see………he thinks that malawians still thinks in regional lines…time is up sekulu kaionanga
