The fate of officials President Peter Mutharika removed from their positions is still unknown as government is still looking into their contracts, the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has disclosed.

Principal Secretary in the OPC Clement Chinthu Phiri said this on Sunday when asked about the fate of two former military and police officers and Director of Information.

“Their contracts are being looked into and when that is finalised, a decision will be made,” said Phiri.

He could not say what will happen in the event that more years are remaining in their contracts, which would mean government compensating them.

Since Mutharika took over power after the May 20 Tripartite Elections, a number of people have been removed from their positions.

They included Army Commander General Odillo and his deputy Lieutenant General John Msonthi Jnr; Deputy Police Inspectors General Nelson Bophani and Chrissy Ngauma and Chief Secretary to Government Hawa Ndilowe.

Major General Atanasio Maulana replaced Odillo while Brigadier Griffin Supuni replaced Msonthi Jnr.

Former Commissioners of Police for the South and North Lexten Kachama and Paul Kanyama replaced Bophani and Ngauma respectively.

The President also appointed former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) deputy director Chimwemwe Banda and Gerald Viola from Galaxy Radio as Principal Secretary and Director of Information respectively.

The positions were being held by Luckie Sikwese and Chikumbutso Mtumodzi.

So far, only the fate of two officials is known. Ndilowe has been appointed ambassador to Tanzania while Sikwese is Secretary in the Office of the Vice-President.

  1. I am shocked that to some people these dismissals are coming as a surprise, but are they really? We all knew from the previous DPP regime how no one who does not belong or pay homage to the Mulahko cult was either told to resign or get fired; this is a clear manifestation of how nepotism is embedded in the blood of APM and the entire DPP party. Old habits die hard and there is more bad news to come for all high ranking professionals who are Chewas or Northerners, if I were you I would have been polishing my CV and puting it out there for other potential employers to see……..vote with your heads next time.

  2. So they just rushed to fire without looking at the contracts of officers??? Really? Then Malawi has a long way to go before it start moving in the right direction.
