Malawi Government and Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) are discussing a project to construct sports facilities in the country, officials from both entities have confirmed.

Malawi’s Minister of Youth and Sports Enoch Chihana made the disclosure on Saturday on the sidelines of an appeal by the Mzuzu Cricket Association (MCA).

MCA coordinator Sajid Mirza asked government to grow the sport by constructing cricket facilities to enable MCA teach basics of cricket in schools and colleges.

“MTL has shown interest to develop sports in the country and government will also pump some money into the project,” said Chihana.

MTL corporate services manager Tina Das said her company has indeed shown interest in uplifting sports in general in the country.

Mirza, who also captains MSC Eleven, said MCA was finding it hard to impart cricket sport knowledge to the youth, especially in the Northern Region because of lack of appropriate facilities.

“Most football pitches are smaller, bumpy and risky to players because of their nature; hence, our appeal to government,” said Mirza.
