Gumbi will not seek re-election at Ltam

Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam) president Duncan Gumbi has announced that he will not seek re-election at the annual general meeting (AGM) to be held at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday.

While refusing to explain why he will not contest, Gumbi said he and a number of other executive members have agreed to stay out of the race to give a chance to other individuals to run the show.

“Only one or two officials from the current executive committee have shown interest to contest during the polls,” said Gumbi.

However, so far no nomination has been received for the Saturday elections that will see the new team serve for two years.

Ltam set yesterday as the deadline for submission of the nominations.

Despite that, some senior tennis players and officials had an underground meeting last weekend in Blantyre where they allegedly strategised on ousting the current leadership.

“We have agreed to vote for candidates we feel will help us to fulfil our needs as tennis players,” said the source who asked for anonymity.

A few months ago, disgruntled senior tennis players ganged up against the incumbent committee, accusing it of negligence in finding sponsors for their competitions. At present, Puma Energy are the only financiers of events for senior players.
