Health centre rehab excites community

Community members in Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District have expressed excitement with the rehabilitation of Wiliro Health Centre.

Speaking on Friday when Karonga District Council inspected the facility, Wiliro Health Centre management committee chairperson Walusungu Mwenichilanga said the renovation has strengthened the facility which was in bad state.

“The facility’s roof was a death trap as its timber was eaten up by termites. Again, the reinstallation of electricity has intensified security and will also ease storage of drugs and vaccines,” he said.

However, Mwenichilanga asked the council to deploy more healthcare workers to efficiently serve 7 500 people surrounding the facility.

On his part, Karonga District Council vice-chairperson King Mvula said the council will deploy additional healthcare workers not only to Wiliro Health Centre but also other facilities.

Karonga District Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Network chairperson Edgar Phiri commended the council for the inspection, saying it promoted transparency and accountability.

He said: “CSOs provide checks and balances on behalf of communities. So, this tour shows that the council is committed to upholding transparency and accountability.

“Above all, we commend the council for quality projects being implemented in the district
