Police have charged Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) chairperson Raphael Humba with using a certificate of a deceased person.

Police arrested the football administrator in Balaka Police last month for allegedly using another person’s Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) and granted him bail on health grounds.

According to his lawyer Gilbert Khonyongwa, police have revoked his bail and took him to National Police Headquarters in Area 30, Lilongwe.

He said: “He was arrested three weeks ago by Balaka Police and he was just questioned and granted bail.

“I am just surprised that they decided to re-arrest him. He has not breached any bail conditions.

Formally charged yesterday: Humba

“They could have just called him if they wanted to formally charge him. We have asked the police to restore his bail,” he said.

But National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said Humba has been breaking some of the bail conditions by travelling and attending meetings, hence his rearrest.

He said: “We observed that Humba was not following bail conditions, he was attending meetings, a thing that has prompted us to bring him back in custody.”

Humba’s son Morris said he suspects that the arrest is related to the upcoming Football Association of Malawi (FAM) elections in December.

He said: “Every time FAM elections are approaching, our father is targeted because he supports the incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu.

“This also happened in the last FAM elections. Our fear is that one day we may lose our father.”
