Illovo hikes sugar prices

Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc has increased the prices of sugar effective yesterday, March 12 2025.

The company’s interim managing director Kondwani Msimuko confirmed in a brief written response that sugar prices have been adjusted upwards.

Communication The Nation has seen shows that one kg of brown sugar is selling at K3 000, up from K2 600 while a 20 kg bale is at K56 259.

On the other hand, one kg packet of Demerara sugar has gone from K2 950 to K3 600 while a bale is selling at K63 551.

Reads the memo: “Effective 12 March 2025, there will be a price adjustment on some sugar pack sizes due to cost of inflation across the supply chain, including but not limited to rising costs of essential raw materials, electricity, and other goods and services required for sugar production.”

The rise in price comes amid sugar scarcity on the market, which saw some traders selling the commodity at as high as K4 500 per kg.

On Monday, Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba conducted inspections in warehouses of some megastores where he found that they were hoarding the product.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Consumers Association of Malawi executive director John Kapito wondered why the prices have been increased at a time it has been discovered that some traders were hoarding the product.

 “The hike will only benefit the very same trader accued of trade malpractices as they will sell sugar at a higher price,” he said.
