Industry says digital insurance to enhance efficiency

Insurance Association of Malawi says the digital motor vehicle insurance certificate is expected to improve efficiency as all general insurance companies will use one issuance system.

The association’s representative Dickson Malamba said this on Monday in Mzuzu during an orientation meeting with police, road traffic officers and the media.

Malamba: It can be used to register vehicles

He said the system will, among others, create one database for keeping the certificates and will also eliminate fraudulent motor certificates in the country.

Malamba explained that the certificates can be digitally verified and that the system can also be used to track stolen vehicles.

“The system can also be used to register vehicles. If a vehicle  is registered in the system as stolen, law enforcement agencies can detect it during spot checks,” he said.

Malamba said effective January 1 2025, insurance companies will no longer issue pre-printed insurance certificates.

During the meeting, Northern Region regional traffic officer Augustine Chakanika said the window for implementation of the system was short, as such, a lot of motorists will not have been informed by the cut-off date.

He said: “Had it been that we had been given six to seven months, maybe implementation would have been better.

“But we will try as much as possible to sensitise people to adopt this digital system.”

Chakanika urged the insurance industry to strengthen weaknesses in the system so that it should not be manipulated by fraudsters.
