Institute faults parties on low voter registration
The Institute for Policy Interaction (IPI) has faulted political parties for contributing to low voter turn-out at registration centres because they have not actively participated in civic and voters registration campaigns.
IPI project officer responsible for Malawi Elections Support Network Project Praise Mwenegamba, speaking in an interview during the civic and voters registration campaigns in Blantyre yesterday, said only civil society organisations are actively mobilising people to register and vote in next year’s general election.
He said the parties’ failure to actively participate in civic and voter registration campaigns has contributed to the unsatisfactory registered results in the first phase of the exercise.
Said Mwenegamba: “We have engaged political parties to help mobilising people because it is part of their role.
During the first phase of the exercise, 2 224 307 people registered against the projected 3 423 066.
Three weeks ago, the High Court of Malawi ordered NRB to station its officers in MEC registration centres to capture into its database eligible voters without national IDs.
