JB pardons 288 prisoners

President Joyce Banda has pardoned 288 prisoners as part of this year’s Christmas and New Year Celebrations, a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs said yesterday.

The statement explained that the pardoned inmates are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences with good behaviour and were not convicted of serious offences.

But Malawi Prison Services’ public relations officer (PRO), Evance Phiri, expressed ignorance about the development when Weekend Nation sought the list of inmates on the parole yesterday.

Phiri said the Prisons’ Department had not been furnished with information about the pardon.

On his part, presidential spokesperson Steven Nhlane said the Ministry of Home Affairs was best placed to provide the list.

The ministry’s officials were not immediately available for comment as phones at their offices went unanswered.
