Joy of Jazz back in September

It was Standard Bank that initially brought Zahara’s train to Malawi, during the Joy of Jazz festival held in Lilongwe last September.

Today the bankers have recommitted themselves to bringing back the concert this September with a headline act which might be coming from as far ashore as the Americas.

Standard Bank head of marketing Chimwemwe Matonga confirmed there would be a jazz maestro coming but couldn’t mention the name as everything was still in the planning stages.

“We would like to assure our customers and all jazz lovers that the bank’s Joy of Jazz concert for Malawi will be back this year. It will be bigger and better. We are planning on inviting a renowned and accomplished jazz maestro, and we’ll provide the details as soon as all the arrangements for the concert are finalised,” said Matonga.

Standard Bank’s first Joy of Jazz Malawi concert took place on September 22, 2012 at the Bingu wa Mutharika International Conference Centre in Lilongwe. It brought together South Africa’s Zahara of the Loliwe fame, and Malawi’s Wambali Mkandawire.

The Joy of Jazz is a thematic jazz festival owned and sponsored by the Standard Bank with a series of jazz development concerts aimed at grooming young jazz talent. These concerts culminate into big jazz concert days featuring a blend of upcoming buzzers and seasoned jazz masters. Last year’s concert saw the promotion of Mingoli Band as an opening act for Zahara and Wambali.
