A K2.2 million (about $5 500) Mzimba North Constituency Sports Trophy has been launched.

Speaking on Sunday during the ceremony at Thumbi Primary School ground, sponsor Agnes Makonda NyaLonje said the trophy is aimed at promoting talent and keeping the youth busy from dangerous behaviour.

NyaLonje said the money will be shared between football and netball contests to be played in the constituency’s 10 zones.

Said NyaLonje: “I aspire to be a Peoples’ Party (PP) parliamentarian for this constituency. I decided to pump this little amount into sports to improve talent among the youth and keep them busy, away from dangerous behaviour.”

The former University of Malawi lecturer observed that the youth, who constitute more than 50 percent of the constituency’s population, have a role to play in the development of the area.

She, however, noted that the dream cannot be realised if the targeted group is sick or imprisoned as a result of lack of role models.

During the event, NyaLonje donated two bicycles to assist in Traditional Authority (T/A) Jalavikuwa’s development endeavours.

Jalavikuwa thanked NyaLonje for her interest to develop the constituency.

He, however, advised committees handling development projects, including sports, to be transparent with funds.

Said Jalavikuwa: “Luzi, Thumbi, Bwengu and other areas have lagged behind in terms of development because some of my subjects [lack seriousness].”
