The International Fund for Agricultural Development (Ifad) has unveiled an $8 million (approximately K8 billion) relief package to support at least 70 000 smallholder farmers impacted by the Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

During a press briefing in Lilongwe on Friday, Ifad country representative Bernadette Mazarura Mukonyora revealed that $3 million of the fund is already allocated for the procurement of seeds and livestock, among other essentials, to provide relief to the farmers who bore the brunt of the cyclone.

Cyclone Freddy hit the ultra-poor most

The Norwegian Government is contributing an additional $5 million and will be directed toward the purchase of fertilisers.

Mukonyora remarked: “Ifad has successfully mobilised a total of $8 million with $3 million already in action.

“Presently, procurement activities are underway, including the acquisition of fertilisers, seeds and small livestock, all aimed at supporting and stabilising the farmers affected by Cyclone Freddy.”

In response to this development, agriculture expert Leonard Chimwaza commended Ifad for its crucial support, emphasising its potential to help farmers overcome economic hardships and food insecurity.

He said: “Many individuals, including those affected by Cyclone Freddy, have faced considerable challenges in maintaining their food security, often relying on charitable assistance. However, with this initiative, farmers will have the means to become more self-reliant.”

Ifad is also scheduled to inaugurate its country office in Lilongwe next week.

Mukonyora explained that this marks an important milestone, symbolising the deepening partnership between Ifad and the Malawi Government.

Ifad has been actively engaged in Malawi for 42 years, with its core objectives encompassing the management of production support and the empowerment of smallholder farmers to combat poverty. n
