Human rights activist and Chancellor College academic Dr Jessie Kabwila has been appointed into the MCP national executive committee (NEC) as publicity secretary, the party’s president Dr Lazarus Chakwera told the media in Lilongwe today.
Kabwila’s deputy is journalist and MP for Lilongwe East Ezekiel Ching’oma while legal advisor is Ireen Chikapa whose deputy is Lewis Chakhwantha.
Director of political affairs is Lilongwe South West MP Jean Sendeza while MP for Lilongwe North East MP Maxon Thyolera is her deputy.
The party’s director of women is Dorothy Chirambo, director of youth is Lilongwe Central MP Lobin Lowe, director of elections is Henry Kamata and director of research is Lilongwe Msinja South MP Lingson Belekanyama.
Mchinji West MP Tereza Mwale has taken up the position of director of public relations and her deputy is Ahmed Dassu.
Former Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) president Felix Jumbe is among committee members who also include Ernest Malenga and Salima North MP Kamphantengo Yona.
Potifar Chidaya remains MCP administrative secretary.
Some of the old NEC members, including Lilongwe Mapuyu South MP Joseph Njovuyalema and Lilongwe Msozi South MP Vitus Dzoole Mwale, have missed out on the list.
But Njovuyalema remains the party’s chief whip in Parliament.
In total, the list shows that MCP NEC has 37 members, including the president, his deputies and secretary general.
Chakwera said more people may join the committee depending on resolutions of the new NEC.
He said the party is in the process of identifying regional representatives of women and youth to be in the committee.
“MCP has a lot of expertise among its members across the country, but not everybody of these can be in the committee. I want to make it clear that this is not a shadow Cabinet. When NEC meets seven days from now, other names may be suggested and more people may come in.
“What I have done is to look at the MCP constitution and place people in positions according to the constitution. I am extremely confident that this NEC will not divide the party,” said Chakwera.
