Kalombo is new Sports Council board chair
Malawi President Joyce Banda has appointed veteran sports official Bester Kalombo as the new Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson.
Kalombo has replaced Reverend Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who resigned after joining mainstream politics and was eventually elected Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president.
Kalombo, who served as the council’s board ex-officio member when he was director of sports in the Ministry of Sports, on Thursday said it was a bit too early to say anything because he had just received the appointment letter.
“But right from the word go, I was pleased and look forward to start working as soon as I get the nitty-gritties. I would like to share the experience gained from working with 53 countries across the continent when I was CAF referees manager,” said Kalombo.
“The most immediate reaction is that having been outside the country for over nine years, you get disoriented and, obviously, there are things that have changed and with time I will get to know how things are like,” he said.
Kalombo delights in the glory of being one of the best referees ever to emerge on the domestic scene.
Fellow board member and veteran football coach Yasin Osman welcomed Kalombo’s appointment, saying the nation stands to gain a lot from his knowledge and experience.
