Mozambican club Liga Maculmana have sold their Malawian captain Joseph ‘Shakira’ Kamwendo to DR Congo side and former African Champions League winners TP Mazembe.

TP Mazembe, considered the richest club on the continent, are reported to have been swayed by Kamwendo’s performance when the two teams met twice in the CAF Confederations Cup recently. Although Maculmana were booted out, 5-2 on aggregate, Kamwendo was named man-of-the-match in both games.

Both Maculmana president Rafiq Seedat and Kamwendo confirmed the TP Mazembe move.

“It is true, after the national team commitments, JK [Kamwendo] is expected to fly straight to Lubumbashi to agree personal terms; otherwise, we have reached a deal with TP, suffice to say it is a good move for Joseph because TP are one of the best teams on the continent.”

However, Seedat could not be drawn to disclose the monetary value of the deal.

“I cannot begin to give out details before JK signs the deal, but we have sold him,” said Seedat.

On his part, Kamwendo said he was excited at his prospective move.

“I cannot hide my excitement because TP Mazembe is one of the biggest teams in Africa. I will have to finalise my personal terms first before I can comment more.

“But in principle, I can confirm that I am set to start a new lease of life in Lubumbashi,” he said.

Apart from Maculmana, Kamwendo has had stints with foreign clubs such as Caps United (Zimbabwe), top Danish League side Nordjaeelend and South Africa’s Orlando Pirates.
