Kananji signs three-year contract with Civil
Civil Sporting Club have roped in Elia Kananji as their assistant coach on a three-year deal.
Confirming the former Masters Security FC assistant coach’s hiring, the Civil Servants’ general secretary Ronald Chiwaula said they have taken him on board because he has a number of accolades to his name.
“He [Kananji] has proven to be an achiever and we believe he will add value to the team. He knows how to drill players and is tactically good.
“Kananji won a number of trophies while at [Nyasa Big] Bullets and [Be Forward] Wanderers and we believe his expertise will help our club achieve success,” he said.
Kananji will deputise head coach Franco Ndawa and Chiwaula said they expect him to have a good working relationship with the rest of the technical panel.
On his part, Kananji—who has filled the position left by Oscar Kaunda—said he is looking forward to his new task.
“It’s a new challenge for me. This is a big club with great history which should not be at the middle of the [TNM Super League] log table.. Rather it should be competing for trophies and also league honours. Together with the rest of the technical panel, I hope we will achieve this,” said Kananji who won the Carlsberg Cup three times while with the Nomads and Bullets.
Ndawa, too, believes the coming of Kananji will add value to the technical panel.
“He is a proven coach and I am excited to work with him. I believe together we will help bring glory days back at this club. As a coach, I need diversity of input. There are some things Kananji is better at than me. There is also an area I am also good at and together we can transform this club. But we put all our hopes in God’s hands,” he said. Currently, Civil are seventh on the log table with 24 points from 16 games, 12 points short of leaders Wanderers.
