Karonga United FC has rejected the resignation of its chairperson Alufeyo Chipanga, on the basis that his decision would destabilise the club’s preparations for the new season.

Chipanga: I have to move on

Chipanga announced his resignation during an executive committee meeting at Karonga club house on Wednesday, citing personal reasons.

However, the club’s general secretary Ramzy Simwaka yesterday said they want Chipanga to reverse his decision.

“Although we have to accept and respect his [Chipanga’s] decision, we are not comfortable to let him go.

“As a community team, it is painful to part ways with him because, apart from being chairperson, Chipanga he is also co-sponsor the team,” he said.

Simwaka said although Chipanga has promised to continue financially supporting the team, his support would not be the same as was the case when he was the chairperson.

But yesterday Chipanga said in an interview that he would not reverse his decision to step down after serving as chairperson for the past four years.

He said: “Of course, the club’s executive committee members walked out of our Wednesday meeting in protest against my resignation but I have to move on.

“This is a community team and I have done my part; let others lead the club. All the same, I will not stop giving it financial support.” Karonga United supporters’ committee chairperson Eston Mwambuli linked Chipanga’s resignation to ownership wrangles after the supporters called a meeting to seek clarification on media reports that he was claiming to own the club.
