Listen to this article

Second-tier league side Santhe Admarc yesterday  beat elite league club Kamuzu Barracks (KB) 4-3 on post-match penalties  at Kasungu Stadium to boot them out of  the FDH Bank Cup.

The match went into penalties after a goalless draw in open play.

Now, Santhe is the only lower league side that has reached the round of 16, which has seen six teams progressing to the quarter-finals. This augers well with the cup’s theme Pachema.

In other round of 16 battles yesterday, Salima Sugar Dedza Dynamos and Bangwe All Stars also booked the last eight slots following respective 3-0 and 1-0 home victories over Ekwendeni Hammers and Civil Service United.

Bangwe All Stars beat Civo United yesterday

The development means Santhe, Dynamos and Bangwe All Stars have joined FCB Nyasa Bullets, Mafco and Moyale Barracks in the quarter-finals.

The remaining two slots will be determined after Mighty Mukuru Wanderers face Zingwangwa United on August 2 and Extreme FC take on Mbabzi United on August 6.

In Kasungu, Santhe held on their nerves for the entire 90 minutes to force a draw against KB and secured the last-eight spot.

Said Santhe coach McDonald Matanje: “After we contained them in regulation time, I told my boys to be confident when taking the post-match penalties and they did not disappoint. It really feels great to make it to the FDH Bank Cup quarter-final for the first time.”

Kamuzu Barracks coach Alick Chirwa attributed their defeat to poor finishing, saying they missed a lot of scoring chances

At Dedza Stadium, Dynamos used home advantage to beat 2021 finalists Ekwendeni 3-0.

Dynamos coach Gilbert Chirwa said they were happy to have qualified for the quarter-finals with an emphatic win and they are looking forward to maintaining their form.

At Mpira Stadium, Bangwe All Stars beat Civo United 1-0.

Meanwhile, a draw was yesterday conducted at Football Association of Malawi (FAM) offices in Blantyre, which shows that the round of 16 winner between Extreme and Mbadzi will host Bullets in the quarter-finals whereas  Wanderers/Zingwangwa will be at home against Santhe. Dynamos will be up against Moyale while All Stars will be locking horns with Mafco.
