Silver reclaim top position

Silver Strikers yesterday displaced TNM Super League leaders FCB Nyasa Bullets after beating Extreme FC 2-1 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Former Bullets players Patrick Macheso and Chimwemwe Idana were on the scoresheet for the Bankers.

Last week, both players were absent due to injuries as Silver lost two matches.

The Central Bankers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, who beat Mafco 2-0 at Chitowe yesterday, both have 28 points, but Silver are ahead on goal difference.

Macheso scored in the fifth minute from a rebound after Atusaye Nyondo’s effort hit the post.

Extreme had a chance in the 12th minute to equalise through Daniel Mponya but his  shot went wide.

Hpwever, Extreme levelled matters in the 54th minute after taking advantage of Silver’s complacency. Babakina Ishaya connected a Justice Honde cross to beat Charles Thom in goals.

You could see panic among Silver fans and the players after the goal.

But the Central Bankers pushed on and restored both the lead and top spot on the log through Idana in the 75th minute.

It was another disappointing result for Extreme FC coach Elvis Kafoteka, but he said he was proud of his charges.

“We have lost yes, but I have to give it to the boys, they gave everything. Even this game could have ended in a draw. Lack of concentration cost us the game. But I am happy with the way we played,” he said.

Silver assistant coach Taonga Chimodzi was a relieved man at the final whistle.

“Our strategy was to score early and it worked, but as the game wore on we were jittery and had lapses.

But we came back and got the lead again. It’s plus a crucial win,” he said.

On the hand, Bullets have dropped to third with 26 points from 13 matches.
