KB coach absence raises questions

Listen to this article

The absence of Kamuzu Barracks (KB) coach Billy Phambala during Sunday’s TNM Super League 1-0 loss to Civo United at Dedza Stadium has fuelled talk that he could indeed be on suspension.

KB general secretary Dickson Mtontholo on Monday insisted that Phambala missed the game as he was preoccupied with Malawi Defence Force (MDF) duties together with team manager Francis Shaba.

“Our coach is back in our camp after completing his other duties. In his absence, Makisawu Makamu took charge of the team, but we have to see how things will be happening in the event that our coaches are assigned elsewhere,” said Mtontholo.

Interestingly, Phambala told The Nation during the week that he was back in training. Another KB official last week claimed that Phambala had returned late from Zomba where he went to see his family.

Phambala’s ‘other duties’ dealt a blow to KB as the coach he replaced, Kenwood Nkhoma, is outside the country on MDF assignments.

KB have not been the same in the second round of the TNM Super League, with Sunday’s defeat being their second at home and in this round. KB are fourth on 31 points.

Mighty Wanderers beat KB 2-0, amid unconfirmed reports suggesting that Phambala had complained of interference in squad selection.

On Thursday, Phambala dismissed talk that he was suspended.
