Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Grace Chiumia has accused some developers in Mzuzu of encroaching land belonging to the ministry.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, the minister, who recently inspected training centre, said the encroachment will affect government’s plans to expand the facility.

Some structures stand on the disputed land

She said there is a shortage of community development officers and government plans to use the centre to train more officers and expand the facility.

Chiumia said her ministry will discuss the matter with Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and traditional leaders.

“There is an outcry that there are few community development officers in the country.

“So, we want to train more officers. We intend to start using the facility in Mzuzu to train community development officers and likely there will be developments taking place. We want to secure the land and use it for whatever we will plan,” she said.

Mzimba North community development officer Charles Matatiyo said the issue needs the intervention of higher authorities.

He said government duly compensated people when it was acquiring the land and that it is surprising that some individuals are selling the same land again.n
