Listen to this article

TNM Super Leaders Red Lions mauled Blantyre United 2-1 at Kalulu Stadium on Sunday to march five points ahead.

The soldiers have played most games, 20.

But the Lions’ cushion, earned through Kumbukani Mwambeni and Ndaona Limbani goals which sandwiched Sparrow Msowoya’s solo United effort, could shrink after midweek games. It was Mwambeni’s seventh league goal.

On 31 points from 18 games, only second-placed Kamuzu Barracks can overtake the Lions.

Big Bullets and Blue Eagles occupy third and fourth positions on 31 points, Silver Strikers seat fourth on 29 points with aggregates separating them.

On position nine with 27 points, Azam Tigers had a successful Mzuzu Stadium outing, beating Mponela United 1-0 through Malumbo Gondwe’s effort.

The following day, at the same venue, Tigers held Moyale Barracks 1-1 through Chiletso Zoya goal for the visitors while veteran Elvis Kafoteka netted for the hosts.

Mponela United, Evirom and Mzuzu United can still not get off the basement of the table, lying 13th, 14th and 15th respectively. Mponela and Evirom share 14 points whereas Mzuzu have 11 points from 19 games.

On the individual level, Ishmael Thindwa for Epac has scored the most 12 goals, six goals shy of the 18 which Vincent Chinthenga scored last season to win the Golden Boot Award.

Deus Nkutu of Moyale has eight goals, making him the second leading scorer for the season.

So far, the league has registered 335 goals in 141 games.
