“We will utilise advanced technology to significantly mitigate the adverse effects of uranium mining,” he said.

Louis expressed commitment to environmental protection, noting that waste disposal sites are secure.

He further detailed plans to plant trees and construct at least 100 boreholes to provide clean water to surrounding communities.

In his remarks, Chitipa District Council environmental officer Kamunkhwala Tembo emphasised the district’s interest in safeguarding the environment and people’s safety.

He said the consultations with C12 Consultants will enable the council to gather crucial information for mitigating the impacts of mining.

“As we await the reopening of the mine towards the end of this year, we expect that these consultants who have provided an update on Esia will continue to engage key stakeholders in the district so that we should move on the same page,” said Tembo.

Senior Chief Mwenemisuku expressed satisfaction with the company’s commitment to implement some projects in his area.

He said he was optimistic that the company’s approach would differ from that of the previous operator, Paladin Africa.

Kayelekera Uranium Mine is expected to create approximately 400 full-time jobs for Malawians and 34 for expatriates.
