Lucius makes surprise visit to Mulhako

It was unthinkable for musician Lucius Banda to step his foot on Chonde soils on Sunday afternoon to join in the annual celebrations of the tribal group.

This is because the artist expressed his disapproval of Mulhako wa Alhomwe in Life and, before Sunday, few of his followers could have guessed he could attend the event.

The reaction said it all—a loud and warm welcome for the artist.

“Soldier! Soldier!” some of his fans were heard chanting and, within few minutes, Banda was surrounded by a group of people.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Banda said he decided to make a stopover at Chonde on his way to Blantyre from Mulanje where he had gone to perform.

“I also visited my daughter at Providence Girls Secondary School and I just thought of going to Mulhako wa Alhomwe to get a feel of the event.

“However, I was not sure how people would welcome me because of my reaction to the event and its direct link to politics,” said Banda.

“The idea is good and I like the unity it promotes. Nevertheless, I hate the fact that it was founded by a political leader who was Lhomwe. It draws boundaries and favours one tribe.

“We have other ethnic groups and they look relevant because they are detached from politics,” he said.
