Lulu storms Zembani gig
Malawian R ‘n’B singer Lulu, real name Lawrence Khwisa, on Sunday made a surprise appearance on stage when Zembani Band performed at Njanji Park in Area 25, Lilongwe.
Apparently, he came to the concert just like any ordinary person, but was unaware of what lay ahead.
Clad in a blue pair of shorts, yellow T-shirt, black cap matched with black spectacles, the former Zembani Band member was spotted in the crowd by Johnny Zembani Banda, also called Mr Zembani.
Mr Zembani had just taken the stage after another veteran band member Sam Simakweli.
“Kaya ndikuona bwino bwino koma [I don’t know whether my vision is betraying me], but I see someone like Lulu amidst us. Come on stage please,” said Mr Zembani.
Without hesitation,Lulu came to the stage amid chants from the audience. He requested the band to perform Pharaoh, a song composed by Zembani Band founder and Jonny’s father, the late Lucius Banda.
Noticing that the song’s tempo was so fast as the band performed it, Lulu asked the band to halt the performance .
“Tiimbe nyimboyi mwa Zembani ya kale, osati yatsopano. Ikuthamanga kwambiri [let’s perform this song the way we used to do in those days when I was with Zembani Band],” said the musician amid cheers from fans.
Later, Lulu also performed Zakukhosi kwanga, another composition by Lucius, to the delight of the jubilant audience, who requested for more.
Lulu commended Mr. Zembani before signing out his brief appearance.
“I came here just as an ordinary fan of Mr. Zembani.I must confess that I am a very big fan of Mr. Zembani and Zembani Band is my home,” he said.
Besides Lulu, Mr. Zembani, Simakweli and Rashley were also on stage.
