Maduka extends unbeaten run

Former Flames captain John Maduka has extended Royal AM’s unbeaten run to seven games in the DStv Premiership after a 2-1 victory over SuperSport United on Tuesday at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban, South Africa.

Not long ago, the only Malawian coach in the DStv Premiership was facing the chop at the club after two losses to Moroka Swallows and Cape Town Kings.

Maduka: There is still a lot of work to do

On Tuesday, Royal AM  punished 10-man SuperSport to climb to third on the DStv Premiership table with 17 points from nine matches.

Royal AM took advantage after SuperSport United centre-back Luke Fleurs was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 59th minute.

The result meant Maduka’s charges have five wins in seven matches. They won gainst Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, TS Galaxy, Maritzburg United and SuperSport. The team drew with Marumo Gallants and Orlando Pirates.

Royal AM have scored five goals after 90 minutes this season, more than any other side.

They have also scored more goals in that period than any team managed throughout last season.

But Maduka told SuperSport TV that there is still work to do to ensure the team maintains the current form.

He said: “We need to work on some of the shortfalls so that we keep this up. There is still a lot of work to do and more games to play.”

Soccer analyst Charles Nyirenda said Maduka has proved his mettle at the club.

He said: “Remember, he is the only Malawian coach in the South Africa’s DStv Premiership. That takes guts.”

Royal AM will next be in action when they host Baroka FC on Sunday.
