Vice-President Saulos Chilima has described the late Archbishop Bernard Amos Malango of the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi as a symbol of selflessness and humanity.

Delivering a eulogy on behalf of President Lazarus Chakwera who is in the United Kingdom, the Vice-President said Malango championed peaceful coexistence of all Malawians whenever he had that opportunity.

Said Chilima: “He was a symbol of selfless humanity as such let us learn from humanity and humility demonstrated during his lifetime. His life story teaches us love, patience, perseverance and peaceful coexistence with other people.”

Speaking during the funeral service, provincial secretary of the Anglican Province of Central Africa Bishop William Mchombo said Chilima’s sentiments exemplified the role of the church in the country.

He said the church and government serve the same constituents, the people and need to work together in addressing the people’s needs.

Mchombo said: “What the Vice-President has said is just evidence that the church has a significant role in addressing the needs of the people.

“The departed bishop has been instrumental in advocating for peace in the country, therefore, not only the church and government have lost in his death but also the masses.”

Malango was accorded a State funeral with military honours.

Malango, who died on October 30, was born on January 12 in 1943. He has been laid to rest within the Lake Malawi Diocese grounds in Lilongwe next to the tomb of the late Bishop Peter Nathaniel Nyanja.
