Scorchers return home today

First Lady Gertrude Mutharika will this afternoon join Malawians in welcoming the Scorchers at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe and join the parade to celebrate the Malawi National Women’s Football Team’s achievements.

Posting on her Facebook page yesterday, the First Lady stated that the Scorchers’ impressive display at the TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco deserves to be appreciated in a special way.

She wrote: “Our girls are coming. They have made us proud and, as such, we are going to give them a grand, warm welcome.”

Presidential press officer Cathy Maulidi also confirmed the development in a separate interview yesterday.

The Scorchers are expected to arrive in Lilongwe from Morocco at 3:30pm.

Meanwhile, other stakeholders that have joined hands to accord the Scorchers a grand welcome this afternoon, yesterday said they have finalised their preparations and are ready to give the team a rare treat.

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and official sponsor National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc alongside the Malawi Defence Force, the Malawi Police Service and the Lilongwe City Council have also organised and a dinner for the Scorchers.

The ministry’s spokesperson MacMillan Mwale said the stakeholders concluded their engagement meeting yesterday at the Kamuzu International Airport.

“All is set for the activities,” he said.

Despite being the lowest ranked among the 16 teams at Wafcon, Scorchers finished as runners-up on their debut appearance and qualified for the 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
