The Malawi Golf Team, participating in the African Presidential Cup in Kitwe, Zambia dropped to fourth position yesterday. The team is behind leaders Zimbabwe.

According to national golf coach Chris Kachiguma, heavy winds have disturbed the flow of play from his players Adam Sailesi, Paul Chidale, Stamford Mayuni and Victor Kachepatsonga.

“The boys played some good golf, but heavy winds disturbed their play a bit. We are trailing with 10 shots against Kenya who are third. On position one is Zimbabwe. We hope to capture some points before the end of the tournament so that we finish on position three,” said Kachiguma.

Eight countries namely, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda and Namibia are taking part in the Presidential Cup.

“For us, to finish in the top three will be a great achievement. It is a tough tournament with great golfers taking part. The winds are a bit calmer and it can play to our advantage,” said Kachiguma.

Unlike the Zone VI tournament played in match play format, the Presidential Cup is played in stoke play.

“Match play puts so much pressure on the players,” said Kachiguma.

Kachiguma said the team has been funded by Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM).
