Malawi in impressive CAF Schools qualifiers start

The Malawi Schools boys’ team yesterday started their Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Schools Football Championships Cosafa Qualifiers campaign with two straight wins while the girls’ side secured a win and a draw.

The boys’ side thrashed hosts Zimbabwe 4-0 in their Group A opener before beating Mozambique 3-0 while the girl’s team registered a 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe and settled for a goalless draw against Mozambique.

The two Malawi teams will conclude their group matches today against Botswana at 10am and e-Swatini at 4pm.

Kasenda: It felt good

Group winners will progress to the final on Saturday.

“We are happy with the impressive performance of the boys today and we are determined to conclude the group matches with an unbeaten run,” said Malawi boys’ team coach Moses Chimbetete.

On her part, the girls’ team coach Linda Kasenda said it felt good to remain unbeaten after two games.

So far, the Malawi boys are the only unbeaten side in their five-team group, which they lead with six points from two outings. Zimbabwe, who played three games yesterday, are second also on six points. They are followed by Mozambique on three points, Botswana with a point and e-Swatini who have no point.

The Malawi girls are second on the table with four points from two games, just like  third-placed Mozambique. Botswana tops the group on six points. Zimbabwe have three points from three games whereas e-Swatini is at the bottom without a point.

Malawi boys team strikers Ishmael Jumbe and James Lumbe have so far scored two goals each in the competition while Khumbiso Gudugwe has done the same in the girls’ catergory.
