Malawi, Luxembourg sign satellite deal

Malawi and Luxembourg have signed an agreement that will lead to on the restoration of Malawi’s Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) allotment.

The FSS is an orbital resource used for satellite communication services, including television and radio broadcasting and Internet connectivity.

The signing ceremony is one of the events that took place on the sidelines of this year’s World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Speaking on behalf of the Malawi Government after the signing ceremony, Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima said the deal marked a big step towards connecting the unconnected, especially schools and hospitals.

“This occasion brings joy to us since the signing of this agreement adds to the new Broadcasting Satellite Service [BSS] orbital resource which this conference has approved. As a country, we are going back home from this conference with great success,” she said.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Mary Kachale said the signing ceremony added to Malawi’s space ambitions.

She said since the government seeks to digitally transform the nation using advanced technology, including the use of space science and satellite communications, the partnership with Lux embour g coul d accelerate the provision of robust digital services.

On the other hand, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) director-general Daud Suleman said the agreement would help in Malawi’s digital transformation.

The agreement has come at a time when Malawi, through Macra, has embarked on various projects and pol icy drives to effectively and efficiently transform the digital sector.
