Malawi and Tanzania have ended a row that led to a stalemate on importation and exportation of farm produce between the two countries.

In a statement on Saturday, Secretary for Agriculture Dickxie Kampani said the Ministry of Agriculture was in contact with the Tanzanian Plant Health and Pesticides Authority to share information on the prevalence of maize lethal necrosis disease.

He said: “From the discussion and reports provided, the Tanzanian authorities have submitted evidence and demonstrated that the disease has been contained.

“Given this position, traders are permitted to import maize from Tanzania after getting the necessary import authorisation and documentation, including sanitary and phytosanitary authorisation from both Malawian and Tanzanian authorities”

Following the resolution of the issue, Kampani said Malawian traders will now be permitted to import maize from Tanzania upon getting the necessary import authorisation and documentation, including sanitary and phytosanitary authorisation from both Malawi and Tanzania authorities.

In the meantime, he said the Ministry of Agriculture will be in contact with Tanzanian authorities to share information on any changes that might arise in regards to the presence of the disease.

This is apart from continued monitoring of the situation.

Maize lethal necrosis disease poses a severe threat to maize production as plants with the disease are often barren and the ears formed are small.
